Laptop Hard Drive Comparison: How to Choose Storage Capacity

There are two main factors you want to look at when performing a laptop hard drive comparison. First you want to look at the storage capacity of the hard drive. The information and data held by a hard drive is measured in gigabytes(GB). For basic computing functions like surfing the web, checking email, and downloading a reasonable amount of files, a laptop hard drive with 60 or 80 GB will be sufficient. Most laptop manufacturers offer hard drives with storage space ranging from 80 GB to 320 GB, with some offering up to 500 GB. There are multimedia laptops available that have dual hard drives installed with a total storage capacity of 500 GB to 1 TB. Those computers are often known as "extreme" laptops.

The other factor to consider when making a laptop hard drive comparison is the speed of the drives. The faster a drive spins the faster information/data is read and written. The three speeds laptop hard drives usually come in are 4200 RPM, 5400 RPM, and 7200
RPM. The standard for most basic laptops on the market today is 5400 RPM.

The hard drive is where your operating system, programs files, and data files are all stored. When you access a file or program the data is loaded into the laptop memory for more efficient usability. As long as you have enough memory(RAM) installed into your laptop, the hard drive's virtual memory will not have to kick in to support the data load. Virtual memory operates much slower than the normal RAM installed into your laptop. Properly choosing your hard drive, RAM, and processor are all critical to having your laptop perform the actions you require in a smooth and efficient manner. So do a quick laptop hard drive comparison before making your final decision on a new or refurbished cheap laptop computer. If your computing needs are basic then 60 or 80 GB will do just fine. If you're going to be downloading large files, such as music and video files, or an above average number of files then bump up the storage capacity you choose for your laptop hard drive.
